Conclusions

Dialogue between organic producers and consumers is personal and approachable. Ideas that producers of organic foods use to market foods are: better ecological biodiversity and treatment of the environment, keeping the food free of synthetic chemicals for health benefits, and the economical and adaptable and sustainable agricultural model. Even thought organic farming is time intensive, consumers and producers think the extra care means a better environment for the future.Growers formed bonds of association in their communities for the sale of goods.

Organic food groups can change consumer behaviors by educating those living without organic lifestyles and teaching how to adjust to the new lifestyle changes. Positive opinions today far outweigh the the negative opinions in the research for organic food production.

Food production quality today is just as important as the water we drink or the air we breathe. Food is what goes into our bodies and has lasting genetic effects for offspring yet unborn. Epigenetics, a new evolving field hows how the environment can shape the epi-genetic code. We might not be gambling with the potential health affects of just the planet anymore, but that of all of the life found on earth.

"During the 1990s, it came as a surprise that many industrial chemicals can interfere with the hormone systems of many species, including humans.  Hormones are chemicals that circulate in the blood stream at very low levels (parts per billion, and in some cases parts per trillion), acting like switches, turning on and off bodily processes. From the moment of conception throughout the remainder of life, our growth, development and even many kinds of behavior are controlled by hormones.

Now new evidence is piling up to show that some of these hormone-related changes can be passed from one generation to the next by a mechanism that remains poorly understood, called epigenetics." [Montague -37]

Synthetic chemicals are not only harmful to adults they could attack children's genes before they are even formed. The quality of what consumers eat does have a lasting affects for their family and their long-term health. How can power be put back into the hands of the consumer?

Choice is one way to put power into the hands of consumers. Choice lets consumers pick the best available organic product over the producers of another based on research. People may find that it is impracticable to research every company in existence, but keeping a list of products based on research is a good start. Getting actively involved in learnging more about local organic food markets and growers is another way to begin. Spread awareness of organic foods and the reasons why organics are shown to be better for health, the environment, and sustainability. Keeping informed about health and nutrition issues is one of the main ways to protect loved ones.Contact organic associations and groups and ask how the public can help. Finally, neighborhoods and schools can start growing their own organic food and learn about the methods of organic farming.

All consumers should learn more about organic food and methods. Consumers should not be compliant or complacent to the pollutions in our food by corporations and companies. Logical fallacies throughout history will persist unless people educate and demand changes. Organic food is one method to break one of the long held cycle of mistaken beliefs that all foods are created equal. Consumers must use the powers of their birth right and money to demand that changes occur; otherwise we may loose the ability to demand change. How well people learn from the mistakes of history is what defines humanity.

Nobody is a useless eater.
