Cons of Organic Foods

Page history last edited by knave2 1 yr ago

Communicating reasons for organic food's negative effects seem minimal and difficult. Usual gripes about organic foods that are deemed negative are attributed to postive and negative reception of organic food by the consumer market. Lifestyle and supply demands change and dictate for instance the limited availability and access to organic foods. From the early to late 90s the changes by organic producers were in effect to accomodate the demand for the growing market at around 20 percent annually. This should not reflect on the overall consensus.

Cons On Organic Food.

  • Spoilers. In fact organic food may spoil more quickly than other processed foods due to the freshness. Organics produce contains no preservatives and are not irradiated to kill bacteria. [HUB -31]

  • Cost. Organic foods cost more than most foods. For families and people with a budget eating organic produce may hurt the pocket book. Due to the inflation of oil and gas prices, expect a sharp increase in food costs at the bottom passed onto the consumers. [HUB-32]

o  Space. Organic farms are much larger in size than natural farms. More land is used per crop than in conventional models.

o  Diversity. Particular crops may be cash crops thus eliminating the diversity of crops grown in a particular locale.

o  Time.    The longer it takes to raise an organic crop, the longer the consumer has to wait for availabilty.

  • Chemicals. In fact, very few chemicals are allowed to be used with organic products. Without going much detail, the organic produce that uses synthetic chemicals are not proven to be raised and created any better than their siblings of natural produce.[HUB-33]
  • Health. Yet, no studies that are done conclude the potential health benefits of organic produce.
