Consensus about what organic food is for each individual consumer may be easier to understand, than what the positive benefits are. Each person is different. Therefore each individual has their opinion, however there exists areas of convergence in the dialogue among organic consumers that have common themes. The other percieved positive benefits of organic foods, beyond economics and soil degradation, are not tested or undocumented here. Thus, the extra care and attention observed toward organic produce bring peace of mind for the consumer.
Pros On Organic Foods.
Language communicating the benefits of organic foods are through ethos and pathos. Some are guru-like figures of authority, while other arguments are made with emotional appeals. Consumers whom decide to use organic produce are able to express themselves ethically and morally. For instance the putting off of larger corporate agri-business to support smaller and local organic farmers and farms.
Savings from Organics.
Savings of the physical type or energy resources are taken as a positive benefit. One of the appeals to logic that stick out as opposite to the idea that industrial farming saves energy and produces more food are the hidden costs for the population. Hard monetary data frames a picture from true emperical data that suggests that may be exagerated or incorrect:
"The environmental price tag for pesticides in the USA accounted for more than $8 billion in 1992. This study was done by David Pimentel, a Cornell University entomologist. It accounted for many indirect, or hidden costs of pesticide use costs that aren't in the cost/benefit analyses conducted by industry or government regulators. He tallied $8,123,000,000.* [Goettlich -22]
In 1997, Pimentel found that the total annual benefits that biodiversity bring to us equals $319,000,000,000 in the US and $2,928,000,000,000 in the world. The categories include; Waste Recycling, Nitrogen fixation, Bioremediation, , Crop & livestock breeding, Biocontrol, Host-plant resistance, Perennial crops, Pollination, Seafood & other wild foods, Ecotourism, and Carbon dioxide sequestration.*[Goettlich -23]"
Areas where hidden costs of industrial farming are saved through organic farming [HUB -24]:
-
Environmental degradation.
-
Fossil fuels saved from travel.
-
Government Subsidies.
-
Damage to human health.
-
Destruction of rural farm communities.
-
Community, taxpayer, and consumer burdens.
-
Pollution reduction
Environmentally friendly.
Organic producers do not use synthetic chemical pesticides and fertilizers; known to destroy bio-organisms; with use that leaves damages in soil that accumulates over time with. Organic produce uses a variety of differernt ways to keep soil fertility strong and prevent soil erosion. Snythetic chemicals can dry soil, make it more alkaline, and eliminate natural bio-organisms for healthy soil and crops.
"However, it should be noted here that it is possible to produce conventionally grown fruit and vegetables with minimal residues. Indeed, residues are usually not detected in about 70% of produce sampled by the Pesticides Residue Committee (and they tend to focus on problem crops)." [HUB -25]
Other reasons are to protect the environment from effects from chemicals for the future generations of animals and humanity. By not chosing organic products, theoretically the synthetic chemicals may end up in an animals groundwater and air.
Instead of chemicals rotation of crops, crop covering, and composting are used to the benefit of the farmer. Pests are kept in check by the number of beneficial insects throughout the crop. Biodiversity is also enhanced by the non-use of chemcials. These systems are better able to adapt to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. [Niggli -26]
Nutritional health.
Processed organic foods contain no Hydrogenated Fat (HF), wheras processed inorganic produce can contain HF which is then linked to heart disease. The lower amount of chemicals used in the organic food process. No transgenic, genetically engineered, or lab modified crop varieties are acceptable. [HUB -27]
Taste.
Consumers may feel the taste of organic foods are better than other natural standards.
Anti-Agribusiness Practices.
People may object to the way that animals are treated at other natural raising facilities. Spending money with producers that share the same concerns about how animals are raised will effect change in the agribusiness model.[HUB -28]
By supporting smaller organic farms the consumer can support the health and prosperity of individual growers in local and rural communities. Also the choices represent new and exciting innovative methods for producing crops and utilizing alternative methods of farming different from the green revolution.[Ostrander -29]
Organic farms can promote local specialities and toursim as well as jobs and reduction of social costs. Culinary tourism is one practice most consumers see as a positive byproduct that benefits a select area for different prepared foods.[Niggli -30]
